Eira Thomas: President & CEO : Lucara DiamondEira Thomas is a Canadian geologist whose career in the Canadian mining business spans more than 30 years. She began her career as a geologist at Aber Resources and is credited with leading the team that discovered Diavik, Canada’s second diamond mine. In 2001, Ms. Thomas co-founded Stornoway Ventures Ltd. and served as CEO until 2008 and Executive Chairman until 2011. In 2007, Ms. Thomas founded Lucara Diamond Corporation, with partners Lukas Lundin and Catherine McLeod Seltzer, and worked to acquire the AK-6 deposit in Botswana, which was later developed as the Karowe Diamond Mine in 2011. Karowe is known for its consistent recovery of large, high quality diamonds, including the 1109 carat Lesedi La Rona and the 1749 carat Sewelô, the second largest diamond ever recovered in the world. Since February 2018, Eira is President and CEO of Lucara Diamond Corporation. In 2008 Ms. Thomas is one of only four Canadians to be named to the “Young Global Leaders”, by the World Economic Forum, and in 2007 she was selected as one of ‘Top 100 Canada’s Most Powerful Women’. Ms. Thomas is currently a director of Suncor Energy Inc. and is Suncor’s Chair of the Governance Committee.
