About this Workshop

The Global Compact Network Canada and Global Affairs Canada hosted two workshops and a roundtable event on November 20th and 21st to launch the recent OECD guidance for the mining and financial industries. We have invited industry leaders, investors and experts including from the OECD and UN Principles for Responsible Investment to share and debate emerging concepts and expectations related to environmental, social and governance (ESG) due diligence for these sectors.

Part 1: Launch of OECD Stakeholder Guidance for Extractive Sector & Alignment

OECD experts will outline core components of the OECD’s recent guidance on meaningful stakeholder engagement and the OECD’s framework for conducting human rights related due diligence throughout a company’s supply chains and business relationships. Followed by an overview of an OECD pilot project to support alignment of the OECD guidance for responsible mineral supply chains with other standards utilized by the global mining industry. Case studies will be used during this workshop.

Part 2: Expert 360: What Should Investor ESG Due Diligence in the Mining Sector Look like?

This panel will provide participants with expert views on trends and key components for integrating ESG factors into investment decision making. Panelists will also provide insights on how investors can influence corporate behaviour, and conversely how the mining industry can structure their ESG disclosure to meet the needs of investors and create value.

Part 1: Canadian Launch of the OECD Guidance for Investors & Corporate Lending Project

An OECD legal expert will present core components of the OECD’s recent due diligence guidance for institutional investors and a current project on due diligence for corporate lenders. The workshop will also highlight the OECD’s framework for conducting ESG related due diligence throughout an institution’s supply chains and business relationships. Case studies will be used during this workshop. See recent guidance.

Part 2: 360 Debate: Why & How Should Investors and Lenders Carry Out Due Diligence? How Can the Industry Change Corporate Behaviour?

We have invited experts from the UN Principles for Responsible Investment, Shareholder Association for Research and Education, Bank of Montreal, and Ontario Teacher’s Pension Plan to exchange views on current trends, challenges and key components of carrying out ESG due diligence in the financial sector with a focus on human rights. This panel will also explore opportunities to collaborate and strategies to exert influence.

Roundtable: Introduction to GCNC’s Working Group on OECD Guidance

The GCNC’s Working Group on OECD Guidance is developing a practical tool that will support Canadian industry to better understand and implement the OECD’s due diligence guidance in the mineral, finance, agriculture and garment sectors.

The GCNC invites participation of representatives of the above-mentioned sectors to join this roundtable discussion and share insights about industry best practices, challenges and opportunities. Input from this roundtable will be incorporated in the manual being prepared by the GCNC Working Group.
