Goldcorp Inc. Entry to The Gender Equality Awards 2017

Principle 1: Establish high-level corporate leadership for gender equality

Tell us what your company is doing to advance the selected principle above:

Goldcorp is undertaking a focused effort from both a top-down and ground-up approach to ensure employee and boardroom diversity, including gender diversity in the traditionally male dominated mining industry. We believe diversity in our workforce and leadership provides a depth of perspective and enhances overall operations.
The directors and officers of Goldcorp represent 9 different nationalities and self-identify with more than 20 distinct cultures and ethnicities. We support the goal to increase the representation of women on Canadian boards, as shown through our support of the Catalyst Accord (25% representation of women on the board by 2017) and as a member of the 30% Club Canada (30% representation of women on the board by 2019). With 33% representation of women on our Board in 2016, we are proud to have surpassed the targets set by both organizations. Additionally, in 2015, 26% of officers and 15% of management were women. In recognition of our efforts, in 2016 Goldcorp was honored to receive the Governance Professionals of Canada Award for Best Practices to Enhance Boardroom Diversity.

Diversity is led by our Vice President, Diversity, Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Secretary, Anna Tudela, who in 2016 was awarded the honour of Catalyst Canada Honours Champion for her work promoting diversity and inclusion in the mining sector. Also in 2016, our senior management team from across the Americas were trained in recognizing and disrupting unconscious and conscious bias in the workplace.

Diversity and inclusion is also promoted across the organization by our Diversity Committee – comprised of a diverse group of employees from different Goldcorp locations. The Diversity Committee raises awareness of diversity and inclusion across departments and focuses company efforts to enhance our inclusive workplace culture.

In addition to high-level corporate leadership, we are investing in a pipeline of diverse talent with programs such as the Creating Choices and Growing Choices, women’s training and development programs. Launched in 2011, over 1,700 Goldcorp women have graduated from these programs to date.

Tell us why your company is advancing the selected principle above:
We are advancing high-level corporate leadership for gender equality because we believe the tone at the top sets the standard for others to follow. At Goldcorp, one of our core Values is ‘Empowering Others’ and supporting greater gender diversity is one way that we live this.

At Goldcorp, we respect and value the perspectives, experiences, cultures and essential differences our employees and Board members possess. Gender and geography are of particular importance to ensuring diversity on our Board of Directors. Women have typically been underrepresented on boards, and we believe that ensuring gender diversity will enrich the Board. The global nature of our business makes geographical diversity essential to Board efficiency. In this light, we seek to recruit Board candidates who represent both gender diversity and global business understanding and experience.

We are an industry leader in supporting and promoting the advancement of women and women’s issues in the global mining industry, as illustrated by the success of our Creating Choices program and the growing proportion of women employees and our Board of Directors. We support the Women’s Empowerment Principles, are proud sponsors of Rugby Canada’s National Senior Women’s 15s and 7s Teams, and are active members of the Canadian Board Diversity Council, the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion and the Minerva Foundation. We are actively committed to pursuing and developing ongoing diversity initiatives at Goldcorp now and in the future.

Principle 4: Promote education, training and professional development for women

Tell us what your company is doing to advance the selected principle above:
At Goldcorp, we empower women across the Americas with our Creating Choices, women’s training, development and mentoring program. Launched in 2011 by Anna Tudela, our now Vice President, Diversity, Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Secretary, the program has seen over 1,700 Goldcorp women graduate and empowered to lead in their workplace and local communities.

Creating Choices is a training, development and mentoring program taught to women of all levels of the organization. The program was designed to assist women in advancing their careers, through education, skills training and mentorship, to enable them to assume greater responsibility for their work, their opportunities for advancement and thereby improve their lives and those of their families and communities. The modules taught within the program include: Build Self-Esteem, Dare to Dream, Choose to Take the Stage, Create a Strong Script, Unlock the Power of Your Voice, and Achieve a Dynamic Leadership Presence. The program has been translated into three languages and is delivered at all of Goldcorp’s mine sites and offices across the Americas.

Creating Choices strengthens the ability of our female employees to: understand opportunities for personal and professional growth; develop their self-confidence and courage; build strong partnerships with fellow employees and communities where we operate; gain access to mentoring; and receive recognition for their contributions to Goldcorp.

In 2015, the second component of the program was launched, entitled Growing Choices. Growing Choices teaches women to build leadership brands, create career plans and build professional relationships for career success. Graduates of these programs serve as role models to other women who will follow in their footsteps, and go on to assume ever greater positions of responsibility and leadership not only at Goldcorp, but also in their communities.

To date, over 1,700 women have graduated from the program (1,300 graduates of Creating Choices, and 450 graduates of Growing Choices). Work is also underway on the third installment of the program, Future Choices aimed at providing women with the tools they need to lead and succeed long after mine closure.

As Vice President, Diversity, Regulatory Affairs and Corporate Secretary of Goldcorp, Anna Tudela is a driving force for increasing opportunities for women in the traditionally male-dominated mining industry. Originally from Peru, Anna is a courageous trailblazer for women in the mining industry. The Creating Choices program makes a huge difference in the lives of our employees and their communities. Graduates have applied the leadership tools they learned not only at work, but in their personal lives with their families and communities as well. Graduates of the program have gained the self-confidence to speak up and as a result have advanced their careers and education. They also serve as role models to other women who will follow in their footsteps and go on to assume greater positions of responsibility and leadership, not only at Goldcorp but in their communities as well.
