As 2014 draws to a close, it is the perfect time to reflect on the highlights and accomplishments of the past 365 days and of course, to look ahead to the opportunities of the next year.

The establishment of our Global Compact local network in Canada is certainly a great accomplishment. Since we launched, the number of UN Global Compact Canadian signatories has grown by 30%, and when we include our network learning participants and micro-enterprises we have engaged over 100 stakeholders in UN Global Compact initiatives here in Canada.

Together, our network of companies and other stakeholders from across the country have engaged in high level events, activities and webinars on themes such as integrated reporting, children’s rights and business, and investor engagement etc.  Because of the committed and active engagement of our network members, we were also able to launch four working groups that have worked collaboratively to tackle areas such as long-termism vs. short-termism, communication and transparency, supply chain, and the environment.  We are looking forward to hearing more from our working groups in 2015 when several of the groups will share their discussions and findings with the network. seasons greetings seasons greetings

Designing and hosting the Peer Review Reporting Program was another highlight of 2014; this one of a kind program was hailed by the 14 participating Canadian companies as one of the best avenues for receiving qualitative and substantive feedback on their sustainability reports.  It is also another great example of the cross-sector collaboration we have seen within the network this year.  We would like to once again congratulate the winners of the Global Compact Peer Review Distinction – Best Report in Group: TELUS (Fall 2014), BMO, Enbridge, and Teck Resources (Summer 2014)!  seasons greetings

Looking ahead to 2015, building on our accomplishments this past year is the priority. The Peer Review Reporting Program will be expanded, with plans to host 2 more sessions throughout the year. Working groups and strategy sessions will implement more structure and a focus on key sustainability issues. Partnerships will be built and strengthened with like-minded organizations across Canada and internationally, including working closely with the US Global Compact local network. Together we will work on issues surrounding sustainability reporting, anti-corruption, human rights and security, supply chain, and more. seasons greetings

Of course, our accomplishments this year would not have been possible without the commitment, engagement, and feedback of our network members.  We sincerely thank you for starting on this journey with us, and we look forward to continuing to work with you in 2015!
