Marc‐André Blanchard was appointed as Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York in 2016. In 2017, he was named as a member of Canada’s North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Council. From 2010‐2016 he was Chairman and CEO of McCarthy Tétrault, one Canada’s national law firms. From 2003 to 2010, he was the Quebec Managing Partner for McCarthy Tétrault while practicing as a litigator and advising companies on strategic issues. He has been involved in some of Canada’s landmark cases and transactions. During his tenure as President and CEO, McCarthy Tétrault was named the most innovative law firm in Canada and one of the most innovative in North America by the Financial Times. Canadian Business identified Mr. Blanchard amongst Canada’s top 50 most powerful business leaders for 2016. In 2013, Mr. Blanchard was named among the 25 most influential lawyers in Canada by Canadian Lawyer Magazine, and Catalyst Canada awarded him the CEO Recognition Award for his leadership in diversity. In 2016, he was awarded the distinction of Advocatus Emeritus by the Quebec Bar Association.
Mr. Blanchard is actively involved in his community in various capacities. He is a Board member of the Conference Board of Canada. He has been a board member of the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation. He has been the chair of the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC), an institute affiliated with Université de Montréal. He has been a board member of the WoodGreen Foundation and the Montreal Board of Trade. He has been a member of the
Advisory Board of Glendon College and Catalyst Canada. He has been an active member for United Way campaigns in Montreal and Toronto, and the Young Presidents’ Organization. He has been the Chair of the Quebec Liberal Party and a member of many transition teams for the governments of Canada and Quebec.
Mr. Blanchard holds a Bachelor of Law (LL.B), from the Université de Montréal, a Master (LL.M) in Public International Law, from the London School of Economics and Political Science, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and a Master of International Affairs (MIA), from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. He was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1992.

De 2003 à 2010, il a été associé directeur pour McCarthy Tétrault au Québec et exerçait à titre d’avocat plaidant et de conseiller stratégique pour les entreprises. Il a participé à des cas et transactions ayant fait jurisprudence au Canada. Pendant son mandat comme président du conseil et chef de la direction, McCarthy Tétrault a été nommé cabinet d’avocats le plus innovateur au Canada et l’un des plus innovants en Amérique du Nord par le Financial Times. En 2016, Canadian Business a nommé M. Blanchard parmi les 50 dirigeants d’affaires les plus influents au Canada. En 2013, M. Blanchard a été nommé parmi les 25 avocats les plus influents au Canada par le magazine Canadian Lawyer, et Catalyst Canada lui a remis le prix de reconnaissance de chef d’entreprise pour son leadership en matière de diversité. En 2016, le Barreau du Québec lui a attribué la distinction Avocat émérite.
M. Blanchard s’implique activement dans sa collectivité à divers titres. Il est membre du Conference Board of Canada. Il a été membre du conseil d’administration de la Fondation des maladies du coeur du Canada. Il a été président de l’Institut de recherche en immunologie et en cancérologie (IRIC), un institut affilié à l’Université de Montréal. Il a été membre du conseil d’administration de la WoodGreen Foundation et de la Chambre de commerce du Montréal métropolitain. Il a été membre du conseil consultatif du Glendon College et de Catalyst Canada. Il a été un membre actif des campagnes de Centraide à Montréal et Toronto et de la Young Presidents’ Organization. Il a été président du Parti libéral du Québec et membre de nombreuses équipes de transition pour les gouvernements du Canada et du Québec.
M. Blanchard détient un baccalauréat en droit (LL. B.) de l’Université de Montréal, une maîtrise (LL. M.) en droit public international de la School of Economics and Political Science de Londres, ainsi qu’une maîtrise en administration publique (M.A.P.) et une maîtrise en affaires internationales (M.A.I.) de la School of International and Public Affairs de l’Université Columbia.
