What is the 50 - 30 Challenge?
The UN Global Compact Network Canada is pleased to be an Ecosystem Partner supporting the 50 - 30 Challenge and providing assistance to organizations that have committed to meeting and maintaining the 50 - 30 Challenge targets established by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.
The goal of the 50 - 30 Challenge is to increase diverse representation in businesses, nonprofits, and institutions across Canada. Organizations can voluntarily sign up for the 50 - 30 Challenge and commit to meeting the following targets:
50% representation of women or gender non-binary individuals on boards and/or in senior management roles
30% representation of equity-deserving groups (racialized people, Indigenous, those with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQI2S+ community) on boards and/or in senior management roles
As an official Ecosystem Partner, the UN Global Compact Network Canada is implementing a three-year project, “The Future is Equal: Enabling Ecosystems of Support in Canada” to provide services and assistance to organizations committed to meeting the 50 - 30 Challenge representation goals.
This project is designed to provide the tools, training, resources, knowledge and networking opportunities necessary to achieve ambitious representation targets as well as foster a greater capacity for diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the future. To cultivate long-term growth, the UN Global Compact Network Canada will be prioritizing holistic equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts as a core aspect of sustainable development as well as employing a framework in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – specifically SDG 5, SDG 8, and SDG 10 – which focus on achieving gender equality and reducing inequality within and between countries.
The following Ecosystem Partners will be collaborating closely with the UN Global Compact Network Canada to deliver services and support to Challenge participants across the country and in French and English:
Challenge participants are also encouraged to use the What Works Toolkit as a resource to support your organization’s efforts to build a more inclusive workplace. For additional information about the 50 - 30 Challenge visit Colleges and Institutes Canada website.
The UN Global Compact Network Canada has partnered with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion, offering Challenge participants a series of tailored workshops with industry-leading facilitators that will provide a roadmap and tested strategies to help organizations meet or maintain representation targets. These workshops are designed to build capacity among 50 - 30 Challenge participants to incorporate diversity and inclusion, gender equality, human rights, decent work principles, and sustainable development goals into their organizational culture and operations.
These workshops are reserved for the signatory of the 50 - 30 Challenge only.
The UN Global Compact Network Canada will be made widely available a series of case studies featuring Challenge participants that outline best practices to help all organizations in Canada set and meet representation targets and achieve broader objectives that help to advance equality, diversity, and inclusion.
This project is supported by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada.
The 50 - 30 Challenge is open to large companies, small and medium enterprises, post-secondary institutions, not-for-profit organizations (including hospitals), charities and agencies boards and commissions. Access to the UN Global Compact Network Canada’s project activities will be available to all Challenge participants and organizations interested in learning about meeting representation targets.
