On June 18th 2015, Global Compact Network Canada (GCNC) joined UN Global Compact to conduct a joint webinar on the “Overview of the United Nations Global Compact – How to engage globally and locally.” The webinar provided a comprehensive overview of UNGC’s current programs and engagement opportunities. Helle Bank Jorgensen, the Head of the Canadian Network, started the webinar by giving a high-level summary about the Global Compact Network Canada. Helle briefly introduced the various programs and activities that GCNC currently offers to its participants. Following Helle’s presentation, representatives from the UN Global Compact emphasized the important role of businesses in fulfilling theSustainable Development Goals, and provided an overview of the programs and engagement opportunities for businesses to engage at the global level. At a local level, GCNC offers businesses an opportunity to participate in its acclaimed Reporting Peer Review Program,Working Groups, as well as webinars and events centered on key sustainability issues and themes related to the UNGC’s Ten Principles. The GCNC’s current working groups cover themes related to Human Rights, Labour, Environment, and Anti-Corruption. The GCNC is also shortly launching two new working groups – one on “Anti-Corruption Compliance for Canadian Companies,” led by Johnathan Drimmer, VP and Deputy General Counsel of Barrick Gold Corp; and the other on “How best to engage the C-suite and the Board of Directors,” which echoes with the UNGC Global Compact Board Programme.
