Jared was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, and from a young age fell in love with the foothills, prairies and mountains. He became involved in activism and the nonprofit sector after witnessing the interconnected impacts of Indigenous land dispossession, socio-economic injustice, and human-driven climate change. After completing a graduate degree in 2017, he co-founded The Allium Restaurant and Bodega Worker Cooperative, which closed in the summer of 2023.
